How can I tell someone politely to cash a check you wrote them three weeks ago? It' s messing me up with my finances and I can't plan anything accurately. With the Christmas shopping, it's cutting it close if they cash the check now. I don't want to overdraft.

I share your frustration with uncashed checks, but it certainly shouldn't prevent you from accurate planning. The proper way to handle the situation is to subtract the check from your balance and (for planning purposes) pretend that the balance is accurate. Doing it that way the worst that can happen is that the actual balance in your account is higher than what you calculated.

Call them up and ask them. Let them know you balanced your checkbook and it's still outstanding, was there a problem with the check, had they lost it or whatever. If you have it documented in your checkbook, just pay attention to whatever amount your balance is and pretend that the check has been cashed so that you don't overdraft.

You should be maintaining a check register and entering each check and debit card transaction you make in that register. That is the REAL balance. The balance shown on the ATM slip only reflects transactions that have cleared the bank. Relying on that will get you in overdraft land real quick.

"Dude, cash the check quick before I close the account".

Or you could alter your ways and subtract every transaction - then trust the balance you show in your ledger. It would not matter how long checks went uncashed.
