It does not really affect your admission. Just don't worry about it. They just want to know more about you besides your grades, and extra-curricular activities. It's all right! Don't worry about it! You're gonna get in.

It is 100% true that more than one person will read your application, and certainly all the different factors will come into play. However, I guarantee that they will read your essay. There is a prevailing myth out there that the essays are not read if you have excellent scores. Not true - my adviser in grad school was on the incoming grad student selection committee at Unv. of Illinios, Urbana; and I know people on the selection committee for UCLA MBA. I know from each university that they absolutely scrutinize the essays - there was one applicant with a 730 GMAT who blew off the essay and was denied admission. They are not to be treated trivially.

Having said that, if the rest of your application is excellent and one essay is a little off, it will absolutely not hurt you. I completely screwed up one essay, plus I messed up the formatting of my application, and I still got into my MBA program. Don't worry about it - there's nothing you can do, and have faith that in a place like Emory they will judge you on your life's accomplishments, not a single essay.

On Emory's page on the College Board's website, they list the application essay first among the things they consider "Very Important" admissions factors, so I would assume that they will look at it carefully. However, you can't guess exactly what they are looking for. It is very easy to second-guess your decisions, but unless you know that you wrote something really bad (such as putting the name of another school in the essay instead of Emory's), you can't know which version they would have preferred. You can't do anything about it right now, so just relax and forget about it for now.

I've been on my university's admissions committee for years.

While wading through the piles of applications, we have one group of definite acceptance, one group of definite non-acceptance, and the marginal applicants.

We only read the essays of the truly marginal applicants. I spoke very strongly to accept a young woman with strong but not great SAT scores, so-so grades, and an intriguing and well written essay.

Usually, however, the essay does not make or break your application.

Colleges and Universities have a board of admition that is composed of teachers.
They first look at grades, extra curriculum activities and then the essay...
If those thing are in good shape you have nothing to worry about your essay...

Just let the chips fall where they may and let God pick your path,, Don't obsess over something that is now out of your control. don't worry! calm down and breathe. you said it yourself. you have good grades and good test scores. if you're going to get in, you'll get in, no matter what your essay was like. meanwhile, since there's nothing you can do about it, anyway, just enjoy your winter vacation. :)
