It's 3 years for the ring of death. For everything else, it's 1 year.

All stores offer you the chance to get the extended warranty because it's easy money. Studies how that if your system survives the first 90 days, it's not going to have any problems for years to come, so stores got your money without doing anything. And if you use it, those stores will try to screw you over by making sort of excuses about why it's your fault and not the machine's fault. I got a warranty for my digital camera a few years back, and when it stopped working, I went to Best Buy to get it fixed, and all they did was replaced the battery. It worked for a while, but then it broke down again, and they said that I can only get 1 new battery a year, even though it's the battery that's the problem. Warranties are like insurance. You pay for insurance, but most of the time, you're not going to use it. If it breaks during the first 90 days, the store will tell you to send it back to the company for repairs.

Whether or not you want the warranty is up to you. There's about a 1/3 chance that you'll use it (360 failure rate) and 2/3 chance that you won't use it.

The manufacturer's warranty from Microsoft is 3 years ONLY for the Red Ring of Death issue (recently extended because it was such a black eye for their marketing). For everything else the manufacturer's warranty is 1 year.

EB Games store policy is probably a 90 day return policy. After that you have to go through Microsoft instead of dealing with the store. Unless you buy their extended warranty that is.
