I was always allowed to talk at the dinner table. I just was not suppose to talk with my mouth full. I had to finish chewing my bite first. I also had to put my napkin on my lap, hold my eating utensils like a pencil when eating, chew my food with my mouth closed, ask to be excused from the dinner table, and never give my dad a wimpy small fork at his area. Everybody has the right to speak at the dinner table, they just needed to practice excellent table manners at all times or they'd get bopped for it and that wasn't fun. ERRROOF!

There is really not much wrong with dinner conversation except when you've just taken a mouthful of food. The manner they are trying to teach you is not to do so. Who wants to look at someone talking with food in their mouth?

Dinner time is a great way to see how your family is doing! We always talk. Note: My father was a military officer~ "West Pointer." This is how it is done. Finish chewing and then talk. Or cover your mouth if you are not finished chewing and/or swallowing. That would be the proper way to handle it.

I try not to, but sometimes a one syllable word is necessary to keep the conversation going.
If the question requires a longer answer, I hold up a finger to indicate "hold on a sec" while I finish chewing, then I speak.

Children should be seen and not heard, and it is not polite to interrupt a conversation.
Start your own conversation at an appropriate time,it is a learned social art that is very useful in life.

Yes, I talk when I eat. My deceased parents have nothing to do with it.
