Its a wonderful idea. Help those who can't help themselves.
Its abused terribly, I agree. Some people are proud they don't
have to work and have a regular income. They think workers
are suckers.
There are cases though. Like a young mother, brutally beaten
by a sadistic husband who gets out of the relationship (and his income) who desperately needs help to hang on until she can
support herself.
There should be a way to fix it, not do away with it.
A lot more money and effort should be put into individual
counselors who can go out to the homes, help provide whatever
is needed to get the person get back to his or her own support.
A lot of states are providing training for jobs, and some are limiting
the time to 3-6 months. I think those are good initiatives.
Fraud should be prosecuted! If it isn't there is no motivation to get off it.
It really is sad to hear that young girls are getting pregnant so they can get welfare. On the other hand some welfare checks are stopped when the recipient gets a minimum wage job to supplement their income because it isn't enough to live on.
The person can't get off of welfare because the benefits are lost. Day care, health benefits. They are stuck and can have no self esteem.
Thanks for providing this opportunity to vent my thoughts!

Welfare is beneficial for those really in need...like the elderly, the disabled, orphan children. Nonetheless today it is a system that needs to be changed and overhauled. There is a lot of abuses, and it supports the criminals, the drug addicts etc. It is really not helping those for which the program was intended. People lie and cheat the systems, social workers look the other way and fail to report abuses "lack of time" ...many people receive benefits while making thousands of dollar in income working under the table.
There is a lot of waste. There are many incompetent workers and managers and supervisors working at the welfare office that has absolutely no idea of how to run a business, they have no business sense. And they are very incompetent.
In some states and counties, they make an exorbitant salary from the taxpayers.
I think if the system and programs are turned over to private non-profit institutions ...it will be better run. Of course the government should monitor these programs.
The welfare system is a mess. They are cheating us the taxpayers.

I don't have a problem with it if your having a really difficult time...but I think that when you take money from the government you should pay it back...I think that's the way it should be for anything...if you get money from somebody pay it back!! I hate it when women keep having babys just to get wellfare it's wrong....but if your a single parent and you have been hurt then welfair is good but work to pay the money back when your better.

Honestly, I believe that a person can need help to get back on their feet. However, here are my beliefs: No one should live off of the system. All assistance should have a time limit, have guidelines that should be followed, and should not be beat by persons that are smart enough to beat the system (ie hide income). This is my belief all assistance including housing. The housing projects were never intended to be called home (as they are in New Orleans). They should be temporary assistance.

I personally agree with you. I am a single mom of three teenagers. Have been single for the past 13 years. I refused to go on welfare. Got a job at a theme park in Vegas back in '93 and worked my way up to a National Sales Manager at the resort. The kids and I are doing quite well without the fathers physical and financial help.

You are spoiled and sheltered if you think that finding a job is as easy as just going out and looking for one. Finding a job is difficult. People fall on hard times and need help every now and then. If you've never had to struggle financially, consider yourself lucky. Don't be so judgmental about people and situations that you know nothing about.

is welfare that bad where you come from?? here in the UK every child under the age of 16 gets around £80 a month regardless of weather the parents work or not , If you are on benefit you get more but this is for single parents, its what we call looking after your own and it is what we pay our taxes for, like the NHS i mean we dont pay for medical care over here. what do you expect a single mother with a child to do?. and dont say dont have kids caus that just isnt realiy in the era we live in.

I think welfare is a great thing that has been grossly abused. It was suppose to be for those who have a limited income such as single mothers, disabled, etc. So many people think that they gov't owes them something, so they abuse the system. I have been on welfare before, but only to supplement my income they way it was intended to be used. I am a college graduate, so I am pretty appalled by your judgement of people on welfare. I do agree, however, that jobs are out there, but can only be obtained if you apply for them.

Whatever. I think it is a great program for people who NEED it(and their are alot of people who depend on this assistance), sadly it is abused and many people think that it should be outlawed... It needs to be reformed.
Oh and by the way, welfare isn't the only thing that needs to be reformed... you attitude needs a little adjusting too. Have you ever gone with out? Have you ever had to go to bed hungry? Have you ever been with out a roof over your head? Try living everyday with that kind of struggle and then you get back to me and tell me that welfare is disgusting.

It should be outlawed, those who are disabled can get SSI, but they certainly don't need both. In this day and age, if you can't think of a way to make some extra income, then you're destined for poverty. Education and skills some in handy to anyone who's motivated, handicapped or not.
