If money were no object, I would stay in San Francisco at the Sheraton Palace. I would eat at the Elite Cafe on Fillmore, or Orale! Orale! on California for dinner, and for breakfast go to Dottie's True Blue cafe or Red's Java Hut.

Stay at the Westin St. Francis on Geary & Powell Sts. or Sheraton Palace on Montgomery & Market Sts. For good Italian food, go to the Original US Restuarant in North Beach on Columbus. Sheraton has a wonderful brunch on Sundays in the Garden Court, in house Japanese restuarant, and a great steakhouse with a bar that has a $4 million dollar painting behind the bar by Maxfield Parrish called "The Pied Piper of Hamelin". The St. Francis also has nice restuarants(but I've never eaten there) and is right on Union Square Park in the middle of the upscale shopping area. The St. Francis usually has some special discounts during the Christmas season. I don't know about the Palace. If you stay at the Palace, make sure to get a room high up and towards the back, otherwise the street noise from the buses and traffic at night will keep you awake because Market St. reflects all the sound upwards like a canyon of tall buildings. Enjoy!!!

The St Francis and the Fairmont are fabulous old hotels, but the rooms are kind of small if that matters to you. The W is new and hip, the Hotel Des Artes has original artwork in the rooms and is more intimate.
I love the day spa at 77 Maiden Lane
The Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton is fabulous! and Tommy Toy's, Foreign Cinema and The Waterfront are very fine,
Enjoy your stay!
