Holy week in El Salvador in 2008 will be Sunday, March 16 - Sunday March 23.

The celebrations are amazing and the processions throughout the cities are very exciting.

There are 2 perspectives to Semana Santa (Holy Week) in El Salvador, and they are both to be experienced:

Try a large city like Santa Tecla or San Salvador for a day or two, and then try the smaller, rural cities like Armenia or Izalco. Very different, both very enjoyable.

Although I lived in Santa Tecla for many years, I enjoy Armenia as I feel there is a simpler sense of faith. People aren't there for the show, and I prefer it that way.

Don't forget to go to one of the many beaches during Semana Santa. Although very crowded on the weekends, It can be a lot of fun. You could also go during the week for a smaller crowd.

Below is an article from El Diario De Hoy detailing events of Semana santa.

Enjoy.
