Birth control is **ANY** method of family planning and preventing pregnancy.

This includes selectively abstaining from sex, using barrier devices (condoms, diaphragms and cervical caps), hormonal contraceptives (pills, patches, rings, shots, etc.), intrauterine devices, surgical methods (vasectomy, tubal ligation, castration), and even abortion (though that is generally frowned upon).

Birth control can do a lot of things. The biggest contribution birth control has had for society is that it gave women control of their bodies. Pregnancy is a very selfless condition, and as blessed as it may be, it can also hurt a woman's health and hinder her opportunities for education and employment. Allowing a woman to control when she is pregnant enables her to plan her life better. If times are lean, avoiding pregnancy will put less strain on a struggling and starving family. If she is in precarious health, then avoiding pregnancy can relieve her of certain burdens like a suppressed immune system or increased need for nutrition, shelter and rest. In a more modern context, if a woman can prevent pregnancy, she can devote her time to job training and education, so she will be able to ascend economically.

As for the benefits of hormonal birth control, there are many! Many young women are prescribed hormonal birth control pills to control their acne. Some women who have especially painful, heavy or irregular periods can be given birth control to alleviate those symptoms and regulate the frequency and duration of their cycles. Some studies have shown that long term use of birth control hormones can actually reduce the incidence of certain reproductive cancers (endometrial, ovarian, etc.). And for women who need to postpone motherhood because of their careers, long-term use of hormonal contraception increases the likelihood of conception later on when they *do* want to have a kid.

I would go with the IUD if I were you. I had the Mirena IUD for 3 years, and have recently had it removed to try for baby number 2. The IUD was painless to get in, I had it put in at my 6 week check up after my daughter was born. It is safe to use if you are nursing your newborn, and it lasts for 5 years!!! Plus you do not have to worry about pills or anything else. The only think I didn't know when I got the Mirena is that is can take awhile for your menstral cycles to return to normal after having the IUD removed. I had mine removed in December 2008, and in the past couple months my cycles have finally returned to normal, other than that, I HIGHLY recommend the IUD!

Birth control is anything that allows a male-female couple to have penis-in-vagina sex without getting pregnant. It's helpful since fairly few women wish to get pregnant nearly as often as we theoretically could: most of us want to have a limited number of children, being born at desirable spacings, neither too early or to late in our lives.

There's lots of methods:
-Barrier methods (condoms/femidoms, diaphragms, cervical caps). Keep the sperm from getting into the uterus where it can fertilize an egg
-Hormonal methods (pills, patches, rings, implants, IUDs, and shots). Keep the woman from ovulating.
-Permanent methods (vasectomy, essure, hysterectomy, tubal ligation). Destroy fertility for those who are sure they are done with having kids
-Behavioral methods. Avoiding sex during fertile times of the month.

Different methods are good for different couples, depending on their preferences, religious beliefs, etc.
