All the above answers are good, but telnet is still used today. Don't let them tell you differently. Obviously it is used because for some reason you need to know what it does.

In a networking class you'd be taught that telnet tests all seven layers of the OSI model. If you can successfully telnet to another computer or device then you know that all seven layers of the OSI model are working. It is very effective for troubleshooting network connectivity.

To telnet to something, go to Start>Run> and type "cmd." Then you would type "telnet " for example. If you do not specify a port number, then telnet uses port 23. You can specify a port number by typing "telnet .

I hope this helps.

Right now you run programs on your computer. You can only run programs that are on your machine that it can find. They use your computers CPU, and your computers memory, and stores to your computers harddrive.

Telnet is a method of direct connecting to another computer as if you were typing at its keyboard. To use all of the programs on that machine. To use its CPU power and memory and harddrive space. Telnet is one of the most "raw" forms of connection. Very VERY few keypresses are used by the telnet program. That means that everything you do goes thru to the other machine without limitation. It allows the MOST capability at the other end.

But because its so raw (not compressed and not encrypted) it can be a problem since the login and passwords can be seen if someone on the machines enroute happens to be looking.

Telnets main use now is troubleshooting systems (since its raw you can see everything being done) and for playing games such as online worlds.

Telnet is a software and technology that allows you to connect to your computer from somewhere else. With Telnet will be capable of connecting to your computer resources, or some other computer that allows such an action, for example a library may be?

Telnet is a very old and insecure method of communication between people on different computers. It is rather like the IM programs out today, but extremely lacking in security. Hardly anyone uses this anymore, and most know enough to disable it is Services within their systems. I know I do! lol

telnet was (is) an older protocal for connecting directly to the terminal server of a remote computer
These days it has largely been replaced with SSH (secure shell) which as the name would imply is secure. Many older ystems do still allow telnet access, but you have to send your password across telnet as plain text which makes it nice and readble to anybody that might care to look.
