what are the purposes for creating an e-commerce website? and what are the uses of a database and e-systems?

a) so commerce, i.e. buy and sell can be conducted through the website
b) database is the "backend" of such a site. Customer data, transaction data, catalog, and such are stored in databases and accessed as needed.
