The Guantanamo Bay episode will be a stain on American society for ever but ..... you don't actually have to go back as far as Salem to see the Americans 'at it' again - try the McCarthy witch hunts of the 50's. They just get so freaked these Yanks don't they and spin straight into self righteous mode and yet irony is a word they don't really understand .....

SNIZZ.....please do not take kamrans rants as being that of the normal brit. he is not a patriotic Brit. he's probably not even british born. no one knows what he is. just a wee boy having a rant and winding people up.
Kamran why don't you give your fingers a rest?. How can you compare Guantanomo Bay with Salem. If you were caught standing over a dead body with the gun in your hand would you not look guilty?. these guys were terrorists and if they have no proof then its only cos they havent found it. I cant understand how you can feel so sorry for these people you rant about and stay in this country...why don't you move to the middle east and help them out there?.........but you wont.....will you because you are a coward and hide behind yahoo answers ranting like a lunatic........like?

The illegal detention at Guantanamo is difficult to compare to a witch hunt.
I think what you're asking should be more like "what's the difference between the Salem witch hunts and the mistrust we see directed at American Muslims".
As I've said all along, we NEED to preserve our relationship with the peace-loving Muslims (the vast majority, I might add) because they are our eyes and ears into the very community that might spawn a terrorist cell right here in the U.S.
If we lose them, then we lose the fight against terrorism, and the injustices and violations of international law in Guantanamo are not helping.
Hopefully we'll see cooler, more intelligent heads prevail by the end of 2008.

Guantanamo Bay was wrong, it was illegal and there is no getting away from that.
However, it was a response (revenge) to the attack on America in which many people were murdered which was wrong.
Two wrongs dont make a right.
Law is important in all democracies and good laws must be upheld and adhered to by all.
Terrorists dont believe in laws or democracy so it is important to deal with them within the framework we set otherwise what becomes of us.
The clever thing is to set the framework which is indisputably fair for all and anyone who transgresses feels the full weight of the law and punishment.

But the Salem witch hunts ended in many deaths, with everyone accusing everyone - maybe there are some similarities.........everybody and every age likes to have a scape-goat I guess.
But thank god that Guantanamo will not result in so many deaths.

For starters-the "witches" were only suspected of performing witchcraft. Almost anything in those days could have been thought of as witchcraft. The people that are dtained at Guantonamo are susp[ected of something much more real.
They're suspected of being terrorists. You remember 9-11-right? Yes, they tortured the men to get information that might help in finding out how it happened. I dont advocate torture, but if it means my country's security and that's the only way to get the information, then it has to be used. People and the press are acting as though they have never heard of torture before. I'm reminded of Vietnam and the way they tortured our troops. I dont remember hearing a lot of castigation for the Viet Cong. It would be really nice if we never had any wars, but apparently, that's not going to happen anytime soon.
