Howdy
I know this has been asked a few times, and I have looked at some answers, but nothing has really jumped out as being 'it'. So I'll phrase the question this way: What would you reasonably expect from a significant other who you are really just starting to get to know? I don't really know her size or taste in clothes, so that probably won't work...

You can never go wrong with jewelry or flowers both make great gifts...
a bracelet or earrings
Bouquet of flowers or floral basket --trust me girls love flowers!

Four words for you: Bath and Body Works. lol.
Females love the smell-good lotions, hand creams, bubble baths and body splashes.
As it will be difficult to figure out what her favorite scent might be, get her a gift card and a cute little holiday purse or something to put it in. Problem solved. :-D

::EDIT:: Oh shoot. I didn't realize someone already said this. How about a gift certificate for a manicure or pedicure? I don't know if she's into that stuff, but most females wouldn't turn that down. ;-)

The best gifts are the ones that show you pay attention to what she is saying. A standard gift is just that, standard. A good gift shows insight into the needs of your girlfriend.
For example, if your girlfriend mentioned she likes Unicorns. Get her a really cool Unicorn statue. If she has a favorite band that's coming to town, get her tickets to the show. I know these are cheesy examples, but you need to do something along these lines.
Her ex boyfriend already gave her the jewelry, clothes, and gift cards.

GC for dinner, clothes, perfume. Maybe you could do up a stocking for her and fill it with lots of goodies. Candies she likes, GC for the mall, CD, Itunes, a nice card, hair accessories, tickets to the movies, girly stuff!

Gift cards would probably be a good idea, or some jewelry, not wikid expensive stuff, but something nice.

Go to bath and body works all girls love stuff from there if you want pick out a smell you love and then when she wears it you will love it see so it works for both of you. You should get her a set like body wash lotion spray and hand wash trust me she will love it and you

you could have flowers deliver to her house that always work on x-mas day. I would get her some earings channels doesnt have to be reall or maybe osme earing that are 10-14carat gol they cost like $50-40..goodluck...
