Since native deer are classified as wildlife, you'd need a permit from the Department of Natural Resources in your state to have one.

If you're talking about a non-native imported deer like a red deer, axis deer, etc. you need to have a double parrallel fence system set up so the deer is contained and at least 50 feet from ANY contact with native species so disease can't spread into the natural population.

This means fencing around your place plus an extra fence 50' back from that as protection so they can't get nose to nose. My sister was looking into raising deer and said the state rules were so restrictive she went with another exotic species instead. Swans were the same problem--you have to keep them from contact with any native species, and we have Whistling swans in our state. She decided on emus.

I think it would be very difficult for you to obtain one. Deer are wild and they should stay that way.
Stately homes usually have grounds where they roam, but we are talking about having acres of land for deer.
A pet deer would be nice, but I don't think it would be nice for the deer; a traditional pack animal.

If you would like a pet of similar stature, why not think about a goat? Again, it would be nice if this type of animal had a large clearing for it to roam.

Deers are wild animals it would be cruel to keep one as a pet, so unless you are a very selfish uncaring person you should not get a pet deer.

That is cruel to keep a wild animal as a pet, don't be stupid, don't get a deer.
