"Most of those held are never charged with crimes. Sometimes Iraqis are detained because of a tip from a neighbor or because a few cables and cleaning agents are mistaken for bomb-making material."

Boston (below) How is it that EVERY story that neo-cons do not like is considered unreliable? Give me a break will ya....

Ed Harley (below) Have a hard time paying attention to details I see. To call someone being arrested because their neighbor makes a claim an "enemy combatant" is pretty much what I expect neo-cons to say. When your neighbor gets upset at you and accuses you of something, make sure that you simply go along quietly and simply wait until they decide to let you go if they choose to.

Let's try this one more time. Iraqi's being held in military detention centers are CAPTURED ENEMY COMBATANTS!

Would you prefer they just be killed or should we turn them loose to pick up weapons and shoot at U.S. and Iraqi troops AGAIN???

They've been detained for good reason (regardless of the odd anecdotal examples you libs are so fond of holding up as routine) and they're being released as Iraqi Nationals are willing to assume responsibility for them.

I believe it will be really sad when Hillary pulls the troops out overnight and the 1st reaction in Iraq will be to mass murder those same detainees. Many of them are being held for their own protection as well.

It's so easy to sit all safe behind your keyboard and criticize. Workable solutions are often complicated and take time to work out.

Grown-ups understand this. Most people are like you when they get started!

EDIT: You're doing that "I'm a liberal so I'm right" thing again! Those who are arrested on charges are arrested by the Iraqi government and dealt with accordingly. The political detainees you're referring to (over 25,000 of them) were captured on battlefields over the last 5 years and held to keep them off the battlefields!!!

You can spin this any way you want to. I have no problem whatsoever, paying attention to details. That's how I know this and you believe some article you read or assumed facts not in evidence. My son just got back from his second tour and when in country, works the detention camp where most of these detainees are being held. More are brought in every day as fighting continues.

I'm sorry, but the idea that we (U.S. troops) have "arrested" over 25,000 innocent civilians and are holding them for no reason is laughable on it's face. I can see it fits your agenda though so feel free to B.S. everybody else. You sound a little foolish!

Perhaps they are there because Haliburton/ KBR needed to pillage even more taxpayer dollars to fund the RNC in the '08 elections. The "surge" has also been lucrative for them as they supply the food, fuel and many other needs to the soldiers and prisoners. So I surmise that MONEY plays at least a substantial part in these types of actions.

And you can bet that most of these Iraqis are guilty of nothing but voicing opposition to Bush's occupation of theier country.

This doesn't remingd me of any single country--but it is the same as what the USSR did in the Warsaw Pact countries, the Nazis di dwhen they conquered Europe, the Japanese in their "Greater East Asian Prosperity Sphere." Or today, in countries like China, Guatemala--or Iraq under Sadddam Hussein.

"More than 25,000 Iraqis are now in U.S. detention facilities. The Jihad reconciliation committee of Sunni and Shiite Muslims had requested that 562 men be released. Last month, 48 people were released, but 40 more were detained."

why did they only ask for the release of 562?..that number seems unreliable..and another planted story for liberals to demagogue..like so much that is written and submitted with dramatic flair..it's okay for the press to concoct and lie..

Little things like "innocent until proven guilty" seem to fall by the wayside when you're on a mission of war to bring about peace. The US has done something like this in the past-after Pearl Harbor, the US put tens of thousands of Japanese-Americans, as well as German-Americans and Italian-Americans in concentration camps in the US. Don't you feel safer now?

They remind me of any country trying to restore the rule of law. Like it or not, it's a war, and the niceties of civil society tend to fade when the price gets too high. Hopefully we can get rid of the bulk of the bad guys and transition the place to a peace-time stance and give everybody the benefit of the doubt, but that would prove unwise there at this time.

most detainees are from saudi arabia, perhaps the true enemy is right under our noses...the only thing the saudis have going for them is oil, otherwise they would just be another oppressive regime with no respect for human rights. but no, since they have most of the oil, donate so much money to both democrats and republicans, and have stakes in numerous media outlets, they're untouchable haha....
