Dude I have no f*cking clue... I've thought the same thing about everything that has to do with the B-52s but you know what the thing is, it's nostalgia.. it's like nu-metal, alot of that music was GARBAGE, but to me it represents High School and fun times so to me they're classics, 25 years from now when people my age become old enough to influence Rock tributes and Life time achievement awards, I bet Korn will be among the nominees inducted, which to alot of people won't make any sense.. So when you look at it like that it makes sense

Rock Lobster is not only in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it's on Rolling Stones' list of the most influential songs in rock. It was the first-ever single for the punk-pop B-52's, whose crazy antics and off-the-wall lyrics with Beach Boys-esque guitars and strong keyboard riffs made them the toast of Georgia.
One of the other many reasons to call this a classic is that keyboardist Kate Pierson was the "bass player" on that song - the bass was handled entirely from the keys.

like many classic songs it encompasses a time and a place that is important in many peoples lives.
I can't remember the exact year it came out (around 1979?)
but I can remember it was played everywhere .
It is just a fun song , easy to dance to and invokes many memorys of a carefree summer. The B52's were the band of the year.
Hope that explains how a song becomes a classic.

The B-52s? I'd call it an alternative rock classic for sure. The B-52s' early stuff (long before crap like "Love Shack" & "Roam") is great! Even John Lennon liked them.

It is a total classic, as well as most of the B-52's work....I must admit, they are one of my guilty pleasures. Definately not the most manly, but then again, isnt all music objective? or is it subjective? I dont know I can never remember which one to use.

It is? Wow I didnt know that its not a very good song. Um yah I would disregard it being a classic, and listen to other classics like Vanhalen.

I like it! It's whimsical, and I guess it's a classic because it still gets played.
