I would talk to them but not in a negative or offensive way, expressing interest in why and how they came to that decision. To go on 'Attack Mode' would simple assure that they wouldn't hear a word you said. Think about what they say, don't just jump in with all the GOOD reasons not to do it. Then at another time, perhaps over lunch or coffee bring it up again and see if you've had any impact on them. If not, accept it. This is a child and a name shouldn't matter!

I would tell them that the child could go through a lot of teasing from a name like that and to seriously reconsider naming them, this time something less bizarre. Hopefully they'd take my advice on that sort of matter, but if they don't, there's nothing much else I could do other then feel bad for the kid. Perhaps if their middle name was something "normal" I'd call them by that, or make up some nick name for them, to make them feel less bad if they end up being embarrassed by their first name.

As odd as it sounds, people arent allowed to name their baby anything over offensive. The people at the clerks office will not allow it, and they will have to choose again. They also block name changes for peoples looking to get an offensive name or a name thats already very famous.

an interesting question from someone named dingo girl. It's their kid. If they want to humiliate their own kid for the sake of being ourageous then I guess there is no law against it. There should be but there isn't. The kid will grow up and either love the name or hate it but they better hope he, and lets pray it's a he, doesn't grow up really hairy or the school yard will be his personal hell. tell the parents to grow up.

I would definitely have a serious talk with them about it.
I was given a pathetic name when I was born and it haunted me until I finally changed it last year.

unfortunately, believe it or not, parents are allowed to name their kids what they wish. i would talk to them about how their kid will be scarred for life etc, but it's ultimately their decision.
i've heard some pretty awful names.
barb wire and her twin rusty wire
s.hithead (without the period obviously. yahoo!'ll block it out. pronounced shi-teed)
orangejello (oh-rahn-shell-oh)
yellowjello (yell-ahn-shell-oh)
don key

I would personally kick their butt and lose my respect for them!!!! pshhh....I would tell them okay how would you like it if you were named Donkey????! I would tell them that, that's just setting their child's life to be a torture. Kids at school lauph at anything these days! Imagine throwing something like that their way. The child would start cutting him/herself at a very small age!!! Crazy!!!!!!!!!! God forbid....
