I traveled from Tampa, FL to Madison, WI via Greghound a few moons ago and it was fine. Be mindful of your surroundings, know where your stuff is and enjoy the ride.

It is safe as long as you are conscious of what/who is around you. I have taken the Greyhound from San Jose to Louisville KY and back to San Jose. I never had any problems other than I was a bit scared at some of the terminals as they were all in bad areas of town. I realized right away that I should not venture outside for fresh air. I did somehow end up on that crappy "local" bus from LA to San Jose. I was shocked at how many stops it makes. The bus would stop every couple of blocks at times. I remember looking out thinking "why are we stopping again" and then I saw the metal pole with a small little triangular shaped flag with the picture of a greyhound dog on it - no building, no bench. It took something like 13 hours!
