I thought about opening my own animal shelter but I don't know how I'd do that and my dad said most animal shelters are headed and run by volunteers. Is this true? I also heard there's a career called a cruelty investigator but I don't know how you'd get into that either or how much it'd pay. I'd love to train guide dogs, but again I don't know how good the pay would be.

There's a book out called 101 Best Businesses for Animal Lovers, it's very extensive and can give you an idea of what's out there.

It's a good book, our library had it and I went through it last month.

Shelters are RARELY for profit. I work at one and am the SOLE employee (Vet Tech), other than our visiting spay/neuter Vet. The rest are all volunteers. The goal of a non-profit is to NOT make money, so very few people are paid, and they are not payed well!! I do it because I like the work and have a very flexible schedule....and there are some perks.
Most careers with animals do not pay all that well.

I notice some colleges are offering one year programs for surgical technicians. They do basically the same job as a nurse once did, assisting in surgery.

This is a career that can be learned in just a year and you would be qualified to work for a vet or in a human hospital.
