without getting aggressive and wanting to hurt them, i.e punch them into submission or smash them in the head hard ?
its a great temptation when people persistently play mind games with you.

Once I realize that they are doing that, I simply tell them. I say
"I see what you are trying to do. You may think you are being cleaver, but you are very obvious." Then I point out specific things they have done that show what they are doing. Then I tell them I don't appreciate being treated this way and I would appreciate if they stopped doing this now.
This usually leads to a short conversation with the assailant saying that was not the intention and me showing them how their actions were affecting me.
The outcome is one of two things. The other person either realizes that they need to stop this game and they apologize to me, or they deny the entire thing and use this confrontation against me. If the second happens then that person is someone I will not be around anymore. If they apologize to me then we can continue to be associates, but I wouldn't consider them as a friend.

I think all the answers here are relevant and positive advice. It's a waste of time and mental energy arguing or engaging in any interaction with them in an emotional/ personal level. Always greet them with a smile (raise your eyebrows as you greet them) , ask how they are & ask how their......is doing. Anything personal they have told you, e.g. decorating their lounge. It will confuse them. Stay slightly aloof after initial interactions.

Challenge them, but do it when they are on their own. They always feel more comfortable playing up to a crowd. They are usually control freaks, and for some reason, see you as a threat to their position.

this is tough but when it comes to mind games you need to play right back and get them at their own game. now that you have noticed that they are playing mind games with you, you now need to see how they are doing it and try to be the one upper. its the only way youll beat them at their own game

You need to try and neutralise the effect it has one you. Maybe try combating them with your own mind games. This will unsettle them.

Do not debase yourself by "playing their game" ; in the absence of civility it is our responsibility as members of a civilized society to introduce it ! :0)

I try to reason with them first, but sometimes I just don't understand why they behave like they do.
