My beagle caught a wiff of something last evening and led us to a tree in our rather large back yard. Up the tree was a pretty big cat with a short stubby tail. In many ways this creature looked like a normal cat...but not quite. It had slightly broken 'stripes' and a really thick coat not to mention the short tail. I think it was a bobcat. What do you think? Do we have these creatures in North Carolina?

It did not have the pointy tips on its ears though...

It sounds exactly like a bobcat and they are certainly in NC :)

Wish I could spot one like that, they are just about everywhere in north america except the midwest (where I live) and far northern Canada.

Sounds like a bobcat. The ear tufts are not always apparent. See a range map for this species below:

It was a Bobcat. Your dog would not have wanted it very long if it had caught it.
