I'm curious as to what type (brand) of laptop would be the best for a student (University)?

Pretty much any laptop brand will do fine for a university student. You should look at what you'll be using it for though, and get something with components that cater to any major-specific needs...i.e. graphics and art students might want a better graphics card and/or processor.
I've been fairly happy so far with my HP.

a macbook would be pretty good if your into alot of typing and editing things... they are rather expensive and you could just get a PC for half the price that could out perform it... with mac your paying for the elegance
