What is the nature of the statements I make on a W-4 form? Does it require a 1040 afterwards to verify or deny that those earnings were "taxable income"? What if I do a W-4 and not a 1040 (or equivalent)?

You can correct a W-4 (Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate) form at any time by filing a new form.

Your W4 does not list taxable income, only deductions.

If you are required to file a tax return or not will depend on your specific situation. Even if you are not required to file, you should file if taxes were withheld from your check as you may be entitled to a refund.

If your employer issued you a W2 form (Wage and Tax Statement) and it is incorrect, you need to contact your employer to request a correction.
