Without a DOUBT, Pete Rose is a HOF player, regardless of the steroid era outcome. Did Pete Rose bet on baseball? YES. Did he bet on REDS games he was managing at the time? YES. WHO did he bet on to WIN? His team, the Cincinnati Reds.

GO BIG RED MACHINE!

Absolutely. Rose was a Hall of Fame baseball player. What he did in his personal life should be irrelevant to the Hall. It's not like he committed double murder or something...
Rose is a jerk but then so are/were many other Hall of Fame players.
BTW, isn't it interesting that given the steroids stuff, baseball might find its all time hits leader, all time home run leader and the player with the most Cy Young awards all not in the hall?
And, I can't believe there are less than a dozen players in the hall right now who used steroids or other performance enhancing drugs. Pretty much anyone from the mid-70s onwards has got to be suspect.

No, he shouldn't.

Gambling on baseball and using performance enhancing drugs are separate and distinct issues. You can't lump them together. Well, you can if all you care about is Pete Rose and you're still looking for any way to legitimize what he did as not being sufficient enough to keep him where he belongs, outside of the Hall of Fame looking in.

"I bet on my team to win every night because I love my team...I made a big mistake. It's my fault, It's nobody's else's fault..."
Pete Rose - March 14, 2007

Pete Rose SHOULD be in the Hall of fame but will have to wait until Baseball gets a new Commish.

he is the all-time major-league leader in
hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at bats (14,053)

He won:
three World Series rings , three batting titles , one Most Valuable Player Award , two Gold Gloves , the Rookie of the Year Award, made 17 All-Star appearances

betting on baseball didn't help him accomplish any of this but, HOF rule 5 says......

Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.

yet the very unlikeable Ty Cobb, the drinking and womanizing Babe Ruth, the umpire abusing John McGraw, the racist Cap Anson, cheaters like Gaylord Perry, the gambling Leo Durocher are all in. MLB should be honest with itself and delete the character and integrity requirements of Rule 5.

What if you found out Rose bet against his team? Would you change your mind? Becuase that is basically what he did. He claims to have bet on his team every single night but we all know that is a bunch of BS. The Dowd report stated that he did not beat on his team every night, and in my book, not betting on the Reds some nights is the same as betting against them. Here's a hypothetical that surely played itself out at some point: The Reds are in a 3-game set with the Cardinals. Rose bets on the Reds to win games 2 and 3. You don't think he would have saved the bullpen a little in game 1 for games 2 and 3 since he didn't have any money on the Reds that night? You don't think he might have given his ailing 3B and extra days rest so that he would be in better shape for games 2 and 3. He didn't bet on the Reds to win every night which is the same as betting against them.

Rose did not use anything to enhance his game as a player. Rose is easily one of the best players of all time, and he is the hit king.

Rose bet when he was a manager. Give him a 2 month suspension. Dont ban him for life!

But, how come sterioid users dont get banned for life?

But Rose does because he bet on a couple of games?

Major League Baseball's Rule 21: "Any... employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible [into the hall of fame]"

Yes the guy owns almost every record. He made a mistake but to take something away from him that he earned in his playing days is unfair. There are players who have taken steroids and are in the hall. It's a travesty that he is banned from all of baseball but steroid users can play and have been able to get away with it

no way!

steroids is an opportunity at success... is it a better one prolly.

gambling is intentional manipulation of the results.

Pete Rose is a bigger scumbag than any one of these steroids cheaters.

Gambling on the sport is worse than PIS.

Despite his gambling, I feel he should be in the Hall of Fame. He did things on the field that even some of todays players only dream about. He never left anything on the field. He gave 110% every time he put on that uniform. The Hall of Fame is "supposed" to be about what you accomplished as a professional ball player, not what you do in your off time. If this is the case, Barry Bonds will never see the Hall of Fame.
