Ive just been able to turn on my home pc yestersday since the mid-west ice storm has taken power from me for 11 days now. My pc was on a surge protector but there is problems. When I turn my pc on I get a black screen that gives me options to (start windows normally), (start at last known good configuration), (start in safe mode), (sart in safe mode with networking). All options attempt to load the OS but bring me right back to the black screen with the previous options. should I begin a system recovery? I really dont want to loose my data files.

It is quite possible that the boot sector became corrupted.

If Windowx Xp boot the cd and choose R for repair

It will ask which drive, normally C: or option 1 in the menu and press enter.

Next Type: fixmbr, press enter, answer yes

Next Type: fixboot, press enter, answer yes

Next Type: exit, press enter

It will reboot, be sure to remove the cd before it boots back up.

Hopefully this will fix the problem and you won't loose any data or the operating system. I have fixed a lot of Windows XP systems this way.

If you can get into safe mode try to do a recovery, if not, try reinstalling windows OVER the existing copy. This works 85-90% of the time. If this fails, you will have to wipe your hard drive and start fresh (lose your data files) unless you have a spare hard drive laying around with a good OS on it and try to recover your data from your old drive making it a slave to the spare hard drive.

We live in Michigan, and the exact same thing happened to us! We took it to a store in town, they told us it was not the hard drive. They said our operating system was corrupted. They also said we had some viruses. They cleaned the hard drive, now it is as good as new, even faster than it was. They charged $120.00, better than buying a new one. Good luck. They were able to save our files also.

take it somewhere/someone that knows how to get the data off and then fix the OS. - don't do any OS restore untill you have the data at a differnt location.

I think you don't want to "lose" your data files, not loose them.
