I was told by a painter to never use flat paint in a bathroom. He said to always use an oil based paint or an enamel specified for kitchen and bath. I went to get paint for my ceiling (because it will be white vs. green for the walls) and the lady at Lowes told me I was crazy for getting semi-gloss for the ceiling. I told her it was for the bathroom ceiling, but she insisted I use flat paint. She sold me a paint that doesn't say "kitchen and bath" like the paint I bought for the walls. I can understand using semi-gloss because of it creates more of a moisture barrier, but flat???

Your painter was correct. You don't want flat on a bathroom ceiling. I would actually buy Killz if I were you. It stinks to handle, but well worth it for the advantage you will have in the bathroom against mold and peeling.

I am not sure what the "experts" will tell you, but it has been my experience that flat paint works, lasts, and protects very well on bathroom ceilings.
My home has a small bathroom with ventilation provided only by an open window in summer. My daily showers can leave the walls and ceiling quite wet. There has been no mildew, moisture damage, or peeling paint in the two years that I have lived there and no evidence from the previous owner. The entire bathroom is tiled to a heigth of 5' all around and flat paint on the walls and ceiling the rest of the way up. I do open the door after showering and use the window in warmer weather. I never leave the room closed for any extended period of time. I did use two coats of high quality latex paint over one coat of top quality latex primer when I painted shortly after moving in. On the rare times that I have needed to scrub a stain or spot of dirt off the walls I have seen no adverse effects. I am sure that if you follow the paint manufacturer's recommendations you will be quite pleased and safe to use a flat latex.

Use flat white paint unless you don't have a ceiling fan to remove the moisture. You may want to use a satin in that case. Not semi-gloss, it is too shiny for a ceiling.

I hope the person before me STOPS asking that stupid question WHO CARES!!!

anyway back to the question: what ever kind you used for the walls should be for the ceiling I painted a bathroom thats what we did and it looks fine. also if you painted the walls green I think yellow on the ceiling would look really good.

I would have recommended the semi-gloss. It's not too shiny and it has the enamel finish that's moisture resistant and compared to a flat finish it's easier to keep clean in a bathroom or kitchen.

semi gloss is ok, but high gloss enamel is best because it's not only moisture resistant, it's a lot easier to wash. Don't ever use flat latex in a bathroom, the steam and moisture will ruin it very fast. that saleslady doesn't know her stuff.

One of these would do well:

These are high gloss enamel paint.
