It is a Pacenet Cat 5 cable connection (i.e. this cable now comes directly to my desktop LAN card). However, I want to share this with my notebook. What is the easiest way to do this? I am not sure if a Hub would work ? Do these connections work only to a particluar LAN card? (i.e. tied to that LAN card)
I am thinking of buying a hub, but need to be sure, before I spend the money.
Please suggest.

What you want is a router. About $40 at Walmart. You would disconnect the Cat5 cable from your PC and plug it into the upload port f the router. The router will then have additional ports that you can run Cat5 cables from the router to each of your PCs.

If your laptop has a wireless card in it, then be sure that the router you purchase is a wireless router. (About $10 more for that feature). Once set up, it will send out a wireless signal that your laptop can connect to, doing away with the need to have a cable running from the router to laptop. You will be able to use the Internet anywhere about 150 feet of the wireless router.

All major brands are basicly the same, so go with whichever is on sale this week. If you go with a wireless, the standard today is the 802.11G model (may just say "G" on it). There is a new 802.11N that is just appearing on the market. But it will cost you twice as much, and is not yet common enough that your laptop will be able to use its additional speed and features. So go with the "G" (think G for Good) at this time.

A hub won't work unless you purchase an aditional ip address from you ISP. You need a router to share the internet with multiple computers.

Is this cable? If so you need a cable router to connect to the line and then connect both machines to it. If it is dsl with a modem either the same applies, or you replace the modem with a dsl router.
