I have been using Belkin products for the past three years. Belkin is one of the easiest routers to setup if your computer starts with a wired connection.
What it sounds like to me is that the router has not received the proper configuration information for your ISP.
You will show an active connection when the router is properly setup. This does not mean that you have an actual connection from your system, past the router, past the modem, to the Internet.
Because the router is stating Disconnected, you may only need to select the proper Connection Type in order to achieve your connection. I am unsure what type of broadband Tesco is, cable or DSL, but if it is cable, you need to select the Dynamic type for connection.
If it is DSL, you could need either Dynamic or PPPoE.
If it is DSL, and you were given a User Name and Password, this does not automatically mean you must use PPPoE. I use a User Name and Password in my modem, but it is not required in my Belkin setup, and I use the Dynamic connection type.
It could be as simple as changing from PPPoE, to Dynamic, and then clicking on Submit. Or, vice versa. Try that and see if the Status changes to Connected.
If not, my best suggestion to you is to contact Belkin technical department. You will first receive assistance from a Level 1 tech. These techs are not that great, and often just try to get you off the phone as quickly as possible.
Belkin will know what type of connection type you need. However, before contacting Belkin, call Tesco support and get any information you need, such as the DNS address, IP address, and of course your User Name and Password.
If you have to enter a User Name and Password to access the Internet, OR need to click on an icon on your desktop other than the browser icon to connect, you may need to use PPPoE.
Also, some ISPs require Static IP addresses. If this is the case, find that out and write down your address.
Armed with this information, contact Belkin. If the Level 1 tech can't help you, ask to have it escalated to a Level 2, and if that does not work, request a Level 3. Level 1 might get you up and going, but a Level 2 has a better chance, and a Level 3 will get it solved for sure. The problem is they try to weed out the less intense service in order to not use up their more knowledgable technicians on calls that a less knowledgable tech can handle. Because of this it can take a bit to reach the Level 3 technician who can help you solve your connection issue.
With that said, be prepared to be patient. If you get a technician who English is the second language, make sure you request them to slow down while speaking with you, so you can better understand what is being said. Don't be afraid of making this request. It won't do you any good if you hold back and then simply can't understand, get confused, and make the wrong configuratoins. Be firm, but assertive.
I did not have to disable my security suite when installing my Belkin N1 two days ago. While it may not hurt to try this technique, I think it is really not needed. Don't do so unless the technician asks you to.
BTW, I had to do a firmware update the day after installation. Why it didn't come with the most currrent firmware update I don't know. It is simple to update firmware on a Belkin router. Simply download it to your desktop, open your configuration pages, click on the second to last link on the left side, Firmware update, click on Browse, browse to your desktop, click on the update, click Open, then click Update and wait for it to finisih.
Good luck and much success getting your new router working correctly.
*note* if you are using a Vista machine to try installing the router, you need to use the alternative manual setup.
Also, if you are working from a wireless computer connection, you need to temporarily hook it up to the modem via a cable to your ethernet port.

Do not use the installer disk. Go into the web based configuration as in the Belkin manual. Set the user name and password, then look for a submit or activate button or link. This is not always apparent. You may need to use a save and restart from the admin section. Also some of the later ISPs use slightly non-standard settings for the connection, the Tesco documentation, as are the user name and password. or their help line will tell you what settings to use, and in some cases it may be required to update the router firmware.

I know you said Zone Alarm is set to except connections using Internet Explorer, but disable Zone Alarm completely or uninstall it (make sure you still have the ZA CD and approriate keycodes.) I used to work for an ISP and it's absolutely amazing how many times disabling a software firewall was the problem. Literally 1,000's of times.
