I have a 97 chevy lumina and i was driving when all of the sudden my radio quits. then about a 1/4 mile down the road my car dies....i pull it off and have someone jump the car figuring it was the battery...the car starts but i smell burning rubber coming from the belt....i couldnt tell if the alternator was spinning or not....so i went to restart the car and wouldnt start but the person who jumped me said that the alternator was twitching....any possible idea what could possibly be the problem?

sounds like the alternator bearings went out of it, you will have to get a new alternator and probably a new serpentine belt.

You either have an alternator with bad bearings, or a serpentine belt tensioner or idler pulley with bad bearings in it!!! Watch for the proper spinning of the alternator with the car on.. If need be, remove the alternator (serpentine) belt and rotate the alt pulley by hand to see if there is any wobble or resistance. If there are noises under the hood, make a hollow tube (like from paper towel roll) and use it like a stethoscope to listen for location of abnormal sounds. Good Luck!!!!

Doesn't happen very often but it Sounds like the Alternator Froze (Locked) Up! Replace the Alternator! Inspect and/or replace All Related Damaged Wiring & Cables.

the alt probably locked up. could also be a idler or tensioner pulley locked up. if the alt doesn't spin freely by hand change it. if any of the pulleys are noisy or don't rotate smoothly change them as well. you will also need a new belt.
