I would imagine it is because countries there are more equals rather than one country being rich and another very poor. Compare that to the US and Mexico.

Crazy idea: to fix US immigration, work WITH neighbors to pull them out of poverty and they won't want to come to the US for jobs anymore.

Can't say it doesn't work, because it's working all over the EU right now.

SWAY: thanks for pointing out the obvious...you know what I meant, right? EU countries are opening their borders for unrestricted passage from one country to another.

It's all about power. Europe is uniting to be more powerful, and the new countries from eastern Europe are not really equal to the western side of Europe and sometimes their conditions are much worse than neighbors of USA economically, it's more about globalization and trying to improve the life of eastern countries. And yeah stand as equal to USA.

USA on the other hand don't want to lose its position as the one pole strongest country in the world; why would they?. They can unite with Canada, which is also rich and so much developed.

A fight for power!

Edit: Just tell me one thing all of you, why on earth some people feel privileged to be living in one land or country and having certain nationality and won't allow others to be equal to them? are they special or chosen or is it a racial issue? Sure it is not racism , but close proximity with racism, we indulge in such luxurious mindset! We can call it greediness or selfishness at least, excuse me.

Edit: it certainly annoys people to point their wrong doing or their arrogance, so they can't digest free opinions easily. People you just make me laugh, if not illusioned by religious propaganda, you're illusioned by political one.....Don't ever think hard, it gives headache....just go with the wave!

Europeans will never open their borders to neighbors, only to partner countries in a unified Europe. It is just like in the USA between the states. So you have that already for a long time.

If we open the borders we will have even more immigrants, that is why we have a strict policy in Europe, just like in the USA.

Reality check : Any country out there that really cares about neighbors ? I don't think so ! Neighbors are only interesting when they can be commercially exploited or used politically to face a third power or when they are just a nice safe untreathing neighbor . That is how the world works.

In theory, I don't disagree with you. In practice, that's not going to be an easy, safe, or inexpensive thing to do. And there are two points I feel compelled to make.
1.) Among European countries, there's far less economic, governmental and cultural disparity than there is between the U.S. and Mexico. Opening European borders would be more analogous to opening the U.S. / Canada border.
2.) The influx of militant Islamic fundamentalists into European countries has created a security nightmare for some governments there. So open border policy is certainly not without its negatives, even in Europe.

Have you ever been to Europe? It is nothing like the USA. The physical size alone is a major difference. What I mean is that most counties in Europe are the size of some of our states. Because of the close proximity of all of those sovereign nations to each other, and the direct reflection of the policies, political and economical, of each one, greatly effects all of Europe. The USA does not share that problem that is unique only to Europe. Our problems are drastically different. To compare the two is narrow minded and intellectually lazy.

They are allowing people to enter without passports. Not to work.

And the way it was before was you would stop at the border with your passport and they would look at you and ask "what is your business here?" And you would tell them and they would let you in.

1) Waste of money
2) Anyone who wanted to sneak in could go cross country and skip the check point.
3) So, cut out the wasted passport check.

Now, if you're giving them all work visas/travel visas, and want to keep track of who is in your country better, you do it with border crossings and customs. Our system needs work, but it is much more secure than Europe. They will learn and adapt in time.

You know it would work if Mexico wanted to work with us.

But the Mexican Government does not want the help, they like the current arrangement, they do not want to fix ti because that way they would have less money for themselves.

Remember Mexico is not a poor country, it just had poor people. The government own PEMCO the oil in Mexico's ground.

Mexico would rather ship their displaced and disaffected over to us, so that we can deal with their discontent. This way they use us like a pressure release valve, to stop people from growing so dissatisfied they throw out their corrupt government and take there country back.

So yes a crazy Idea that could work if the Mexican Government actually let us do it.

But they won't

As the end of the day in Europe they go home.

Here they are staying and sucking down the social programs.

France is now having issues and so the rest of the EU with thier own boarder policies.

Are those countries supporting the citizens from other countries? Are the new arrivals working in the new country and not paying taxes? Do they get free health care and education? Are these new people DEMANDING rights they don't legally have?

Sorry but the situation is apples & oranges if the new country isn't giving freebies! THIS IS THE REASON IT DOESN'T WORK HERE!

I am an American. I do not speak for the people of Europe. To me this seems to be a suicidal move but I will let the Europeans answer themselves.

Merry Christmas!

We are not European, THANK GOD!!!!

Ya the EU is way a prime example of what not to do. If it was so successful why is the UK still using the Pound and not the Euro as its general currency?

Get a grip my friend America is the largest economic powerhouse in the world and Mexico is barely a second world nation if that. Why would we want to open our borders? It justs causes a downgrade in our society.
