I was driving down the road and I saw about a 13 year old boy swerving back and forth into the road with his bicycle while he was talking on a cell phone. Why does a 13 year old need a cell phone? What is so important that he needs to talk on it while he's riding his bike?

(Did I mention that I hate cell phones in general??)

I have a cell phone. It sits in the glove compartment of my car for emergencies. I talk on it for maybe 10 minutes a month for long distance calls. I don't need people to get ahold of me 24 hours a day (like 99% of people) so people can leave a message on my answering machine if I'm not at home.

I know what you mean. People die everyday because, heaven forbid, they have to focus on something other than their own and the lives of passengers!

Apparently, it would absolutely kill them to pull over and talk.

Thats pretty stupid to be talking on the phone while your riding a bike. I mean if he really needed to talk so badly he should have pulled over somewhere to talk. Thats where accidents happen. And the same with people driving with there cell phones there so distracted by the conversation there having then keeping there eyes on the road. A lot of states like here in CT are cracking down on driving with cell phones. But i dont like cell phones either they tack on fees that your not even paying for. I know what you mean. All they want is there stupid commision.

Yeah I've heard of someone giving their 9 year old a cell phone...what's up with that? I can see if it's for an emergency but usually they aren't, and one could get a prepaid phone for that. I have ridden my bike while on the phone before, but I don't swerve or anything...I drive and talk but I'm one of those who isn't affected by it like swerving, going slow or too fast, etc, no different than if I were talking to someone next to me in the car. If I did things like swerve when driving though, you can bet I wouldn't talk while driving anymore.

And what's with people being on their phone all the freakin time? It's like people can't go without talking to someone else. I read an article once about how cell phones can contribute to the dilution of conversation quality, and I have to agree

Good for you! I hate them too. They have there uses but I often wonder what is so urgent or important that cannot wait till you get home or meet the person at the other end of the phone. I am wondering whether it is possible to become addicted to your cell phone. Do these people ever have anything left to say when they meet family/friends? As far as children are concerned, how can they afford to keep their phone topped up. Are parents possibly having to support two or three cell phones as well as their own?

You hate cell phones because... you're afraid of modern technology?
Cell phones are great.
The reason that 13 year olds (Mostly girls) have cell phones is so that they can contact someone if they are in danger. Mine has been very helpful in such situations. Also used when the parents are always busy and the child has to arrange to be picked up and taken home from school by other people. Most parents only allow their children to use their phones for emergencies.

First, a thirteen year old doesn't need a phone it's just something nice to have. Second, thats just the thirteen year old acting stupid by not payin attention to what's going on in the road just because he's trying to pay attention to his conversation. And third, where is his mom while he's riding a bike on the phone in the road??? Cell phones can come in handy in certain situations, but that was not one.

I agree with you I dislike them, you can't hear half the time. I read a article by a ENT that stated they will cause deafness. I just don't like them and I may seen simple but I don't have one and I don't want one. Another thing I don't like is all these different numbers that you are called on, you never who they are or really what they want. I may be old fashion but I still like Call ID with real number of the party calling. To me it is so silly to get a call from New york and they are right in the next town. I don't answer my phone half the time even when it comes on my Dish receiver, I just don't to know if I really want to talk to whoever dials from Brooklyn.

I am a thirteen year old and i hate my cellphone it is a liability 100% of the time. The fact of the matter is that we do need our cell phones. While it is really irresponsible of him to have his cellphone out while he was on his bike, his parents probably bought it for him for school. My mom can never remember to pick me up from school so as apposed to wasting a fortune on pay phones i got a cellphone. I truly do hate my cellphone i lose it all the time people make fun of me for how old it is but the fact of th ematter is no matter how much i want to smash it i need it

pssh yea its gettin a lil ridiculous for me too i kno 7 year olds with cellphones and ur right it is a big distraction u kno (i forget where) they have this experiment where u are driving and have to listen to everything the cellphone says while stoppin at red lights missin kids playin in the street random drivers bein assholes...no one has passed kinda removin the idea of multitaskin in your car, aside even in a car without distraction it can be dangerous, but the worst is when ur in a line and someone is tryin to talk on their cell and order/pay at the same time and a lot of "not yous, and no i was talkin to the persons" are exchanged
***AFTER READIN SOME OTHER ANSWERS I HAVE TO SAY IT DOESNT BOTHER U THAT THE 13YO DOESNT HAVE A JOB? HE ISNT PAYIN FOR IT AND DOESNT THAT SPAWN SOME OF THE TROUBLE WITH KIDS LIVIN WITH THEIR PARENTS UNTIL THEY'RE 25? MORE OR LIKELY THE SAME BOY U SAW ON THE PHONE WILL STILL BE ON THAT PHONE 5 YEARS FROM NOW....AND NOT PAYIN FOR IT***

I will admit to talking on my cell phone while driving sometimes, but I always put it on speaker phone, and then put it in the cup holder and talk on it. And I agree a 13 yr old doesnt need a cell phone.

i think you need to get a cell phone yourself to see how much people need cell phones but that was stupid for that kid to be swerving on his bike because of a cellphone, i work in a cell phone store and i have seen parents buying phones for their 6year olds, so relax get a cell phone
