Should they hire a bodyguard, pay out of pocket for doctors, and deny their federally funded pensions?

Sway_27 (below) Why should any tax payer pay for their personal security and their personal health problems? They say the feds do such a lousy job at everything. Even though they too are federal employees.

Yes, it always cracks me up when GOP/libertarian types talk about failure of government. The country would be in chaos without government services and these people are either such idiots or such liars, they say free market should reign.

I say look out your window, what would you see with no government? No curbs, gutters, sewers, street and traffic lights. The air would be dark with pollution and filled with noise. A factory could be built next to your house and you couldn't do anything about it. No government means no currency, no contract enforcement, no police, no military, no order.

GOP wouldn't be happy because they couldn't hand out corporate welfare and make laws to benefit their campaign contributors at the expense of the American people.

What you and many people do not seem to realize is that they do pay for it, at least figuratively speaking. Everyone who works gets compensated for it. I work for a company. I receive compensation for my work. Some of that compensation comes in the form of money, some in health care insurance, some in life insurance, some in vacation and sick time and some as pension investments. In order to calculate how much I am really paid, you need to calculate in the dollar value of those other things, too.

If I had to pay for my own health insurance, life insurance and pension I would have to be paid a lot more in cash. What we see happening with those people who reportedly make $70,000 dollars and do not have health insurance it is that they get paid dollars instead of benefits. That means they need to spend their money more wisely. Someone who gets paid $70,000 without benefits is earning far less then someone who is paid $70,000 plus benefits. The person not earning benefits cannot live like the one who does. That is the problem.

Congress people are paid compensation. That includes those benefits. If you believe it is too much, you may be correct but that is what they get paid. If you become a Congressman that is what you will be paid.

No matter how you look at it, no one gets benefits for free.

-Merry Christmas!

Yep, GOP politicians should forgo federal healthcare and federal pensions that the majority of Americans are not eligible for, they're using our tax dollars to provide benefits that are superior to what the majority of Americans get.

Republicans want to get rid of funding for social services-they should start with their social services first. In addition, if Republican politicians want to cut social services, they should live like their constituents before they institute a policy: if they want to cut food stamps, they should eat what they can on the new food stamp policy for a month. You want cuts, you live with it first.

You're confusing Republican with Libertarian. Reps like to have govt programs that kill others and empower themselves only. That's as opposed to Dems, who have govt programs to enable the poor to eat large bags of exotic unprepared seafood with government money.

All politicians should deny their pensions. They are servants, and unless we're all getting the same pensions, they aren't serving.

A good point. Maybe they should also forego public schooling, police and fire services, avoid walking on sidewalks, and don't drive on roads either. These government "handouts" run contrary to their ideals.

Yes and Democrats should forgo any protection when they go abroad because they oppose the military.
