ive seen sharks in the aquariums and they are never that big. they have small mouths. In the movie jaws the shark was bigger than the boat and had a HUGE mouth, it looked like it could eat the boat. Was that really how big some are or an exageration? Because you usually hear about how they bite off arms or legs and this one looked like it could swallow 10 people whole.

First off sharks come in all different sizes. The largest shark today is the whale shark which eats plankton (microscopic organisms). The shark in jaws was modeled after the Great White sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) . The real great whites aren't that large to begin with. Most sharks to have very large mouths the may look small but try to imagine them open, it becomes very large they have huge jaws made up of hard cartilage since sharks have no bones in their body. The short answer is no they aren't that big. The only great white in captivity today is right near me at the Monterey bay aqaurium. It is still very young though and very small compared to a full grown great white. So real sharks aren't that large and also they don't have huge jaws compared to the ones in the movie Jaws.

The shark in Jaws is about twice as big as a great white (the shark it was modeled after), or about half the size of the extinct Megalodon. Also, sharks seem like they have a small mouth when they are closed but when they strike at something their mouth kinda unfolds and it's true size is shown. The jaws of a shark are the only bones inside the shark, which allows for it to unfold and protrude during a strike.

The shark in the movie was an exaggeration of what sharks really look like and what shark behavior is. The only shark that even comes close to being as large as Jaws is the Whale Shark and it eats baleen.
