Yesterday I was watching the George Lopez show and in the episode this one man moved into the neighborhood and George said he was racist against latinos. The man had a statue of a Mexican man sitting down with his head down and his sombrero covering his whole head. Obviously it was a statue of a Mexican sleeping, but I don't get why it was offensive.

I think a lot of statues like that were made in a time when discrimination was more rampant. Maybe Lopez didnt like the idea of his people being relegated to the level of a quaint 'lawn ornament'. Come to think of it, I havent ever seen a statue of a white person in the yard of someone of a different race.Well, Betty Boop once, but she's a cartoon. When race is an issue, little things sure can become more pronounced. A bit of sensitivity is in order.

It's just about silly stereotypes that people have around that really insecure people might find offensive. I remember when everyone took down those cast-iron black jockeys that hold a ring to tie your horse to. Or painted the faces white! What next, are we going to take down that fat lady bending over or gnomes or flamingos or whirligigs of guys sawing wood? I wouldn't mind Mexicans sleeping in my yard, but (except for my friends) they work like crazy! My neighbor does have a Betty Boop, and I think I should get annoyed that he thinks white women are floozies.

Because it is a stereotype.

I'm amazed that this show would note that as I find it one of the most offensive shows on tv. It is one great long stereotype about Mexican and others from Spanish-speaking countries most episodes I have seen. I admit I have only seen portions of the show as I am usually offended in the first 5 minutes.

It promotoes a stereotype, most intelligent minorities are offended by stereotypes making them look less than flattering. Furthermore, it's even worst when it's coming from another person of the same ethnic background. That level of self-hate is offensive to many.

Also, many educated Latino's are also offended by the word Hispanic. (i'm Dominican). Hispanic meaning someone of European descent as The word hispanic comes from Spain. The romans used to call spain Hispanola so hispanic basically means people of hispanola or spain. Hispanic = European.

*end rant* lol

I don't know what to consider them. I think for their race they're white. I think hispanic sounds nicer than spaniard and that's what I call people from Latin America, I call people from Spain Spanish.

I saw that episode last night too! I think it would be offensive to some Mexicans, but most Mexicans can take a joke.

It is a stereotype indicating that Mexicans are lazy and spend most of the day taking a siesta.
