This morning I woke up and gave myself a good stretch. When I turned my head to the left side when stretching, it cracked. Now it hurts when I turn it either side, more when I turn it to the left. Can anyone tell me what happened, and should I go get x-rays?

You can't get x-rays without an order from a physician. He or she will decide if they are necessary.

There was probably not enough force to cause a sprain (ligament tear). Most likely a strain (muscle tear). You can see at the resource below if your pain location matches any of the muscle pain patterns. As long as you have no dizziness, nausea, pain or numbness into the arms or hands, you should not require x-rays.
