could be just in need of a tranny fluid and filter change and it might be ok but I wouldn't take the chance because if that doesn't fix the problem your looking at $2,000 to put a new tranny in it.

Is this a high mileage car??? I'm assuming that this is an automatic. Inside the auto trans are bands, clutches, torque converter, and valve body which controls how things work. If your fluid is burnt smelling you may have burnt clutches. The band inside that 'grabs' first gear may be getting an improper signal from the valve body.
