Where I work bosses aren't allowed to give extra money to employees, so my boss bought us some expensive popcorn and gave us a gift card. It was really nice, b/c other bosses in my building don't give their employees squat. =)

Not all employers are able to give bonuses, But they do find someway most of the time to replace the cash most busnisses give out. My mom gets a turkey from her employer every christmas, my Dad gets a gift card to a local resturant, I just started my new job this month so Im not sure if we get anything. I think those employers that dont even attempt to give some gift as a way of saying thanks for a good yr, need a kick in the pants and to quit being scrouge like.

Except that it's the actions of the employees that have a large part to do with the performance of the company.

My Christmas bonuses have always been so measly, I barely notice them so don't care much one way or the other.

Many bosses are struggling to make payroll. A bonus is something above and beyond that. What have you done above and beyond your normal job responsibilities through the year?

Have you given your mail carrier any bonus? We receive according to how we give, we give according to how we receive.

Our boss did give us a bonusbut before he did, we took up a collection and bought a nice gift for him too. The money he gave was really unimportant to him but the gift he received was priceless because we thought enough of him to give it to him. Has your office ever given your boss a gift at Christmas?

Well, companies can only pay out of money they have. So it's only rational to understand that if the pie is smaller, the slices they can dole out are smaller.

It also depends on whether the bonus is stated in advance as discretionary or if the bonus is something you are entitled to. If a bonus is discretionary, I say "thank you" no matter what, and I move on with my life because it isn't worth fretting over. If I'm entitled to it, then I would fight for it.

Would you rather have the bonus at the cost of the business closing their doors?
I'd rather get the raises during the year for doing such a great job.

It is a bonus, your are not entitled to it.

You are sacrificing nothing, you are just not being given something for free. If that extra bit of money is so important you should do some work to earn it, not expect it in payment just because of a holiday. Go get a second job for a month or so. Earn your 'bonus!'

Regardless, employers should give their employees something. There is just no excuse for forgetting the people who work for the company and hold it together.
