Once, I wanted to buy a small thoughtful gift for my fiance, not for any particular occassion but just to let him know I cared.
I ended up deciding to "go over the top" and spend hundreds of dollars on lots of gifts.
I think either way I would have made my point, but it was really fun to go all out. Of course, I really had to stretch my budget for a while afterwards, but it was worth it.
