Your mouse is having some serious problems. The best solution would be to just purchase a new one.

This happens with USB connected mouse. The PS/2 port in the back side of your computer is actually meant for mouse connection. But since a USB mouse is connected to a USB port, windows find it difficult to recognise it.But I dont think it calls for shutting down your computer. If this is the case, try the control panel and check( double click) the mouse icon.Check whether the device is functioning perfectly or not.Check for the drivers. This I hope will solve your problem. So also go into BIOS setting and check. I've seen some one commenting on Windows 98SE here saying it is outdated.I agree but my dear, Windows98SE is the best software without any bugs. And till today, I have this as well as Windows XP both platforms on my computer. Why ? the FAT32 file system is more reliable then NTFS.Alone the win XP is most likely to crash for his information. Why ? Cannot explain here due to space and time constraint.Anyway your choice of Win 98SE is absolutely correct.

You may want to just get a USB to PS2 adapter so you can plug your USB mouse into the PS2 port. You should also try reinstalling the USB drivers. Also, if the clock on your puter has started to slow down you may want to replace the CMOS battery on the motherboard because its what loads your bios when you fire your rig up and if it gets too weak you could be loading corrupt bios which could effect your USB drivers. I suspect, since your rigs running 98SE, that the battery isn't exactly fresh.

Windows 98, come on, it's time to move on to at least XP. In my small computer repair business, we won't work on a 98 installation any more. It has way to many unpatched security problems. And the FAT32 file system has been outdated for over 8 years.
