Republican party - Tax cuts for the rich, we like shotguns, let's stay at war, our ancestors came over here illegally and that is why I am here right now but hey Mexicans you aren't allowed!, and we also like your fetus.....

Democratic party - Decrease the gap between piss poor and super-rich (Repuke's call this Communism), guns are ending up in the wrong hands, and we think about how well our child's quality of life is going to be before we bring them into hell.

Nothing anymore...they're all crooks.

For a better, more traditional answer, DO NOT use this website as a source. You'll get a few real answers, but it'll start as "democrats are all evil because of A" and then "republicans are all evil because of B". Inevitably, A and B will be two of the most vile things you've ever heard of. Then, one or two people will attempt to answer it without a bias, but will still fail. Then, the last few posts will concentrate on one answerer bashing one of the answers before theirs, all while not even addressing the question.

The differences and the definitions have changed over the years, especially as of late it seems. You'll find better answers in seeing what either party truly stands for anymore, or what their party position is. This being the time where we're coming up on an election cycle, both parties will trip over themselves to get their respective takes-on-issues out. Look them up, and figure them out for yourself.

I'm not trying to be snarky with that answer, but the realty of it is, when it comes to politics, you can just about count on the fact that any and all answers given to you have some sort of self-serving purpose and will lack honesty and integrity. If you truly want to know the answer, it'll have to be something you research yourself and apply your own opinions to before someone else does it for you.

I am from the UK, so my knowledge of US politics is limited.

But from what I do know, the republicans are a right wing Authoritarian party. They believe that the state should have an involvement in every aspect of your civil life, yet they also believe that you should have economic liberty.

The Democrats are a Right of Center Libertarian party. They believe that the state should have minimal involvement in your life.

Yet arguably the difference is limited.
They both agree on the FPTP electoral system.
They both agree on Low taxes and Low public services
They both agree on a free market economy
They both agree on a two party democracy

LIBERALISM: "A political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of man, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties."

CONSERVATISM: "A political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions and preferring gradual development to abrupt change."

Funny how Republicans and Democrats are so much alike, yet they seem to think they're so radically different. I don't know a conservative (Republican) who doesn't want to protect his civil liberties, nor do I know a liberal (Democrat) who doesn't want social stability. -RKO- 12/21/07

Nothing at the top. It is all about who gets to distribute monies,i.e. corporations first to the people or people first to the corporations. The end result is the same, just some get "cheated".

Not as much as they want people to believe. We need a third party.
