You can go to Game Stop and purchase a rain check. It will cost the full $250 + tax at the time you get the rain check. They will guarantee a Wii by the end of January. Otherwise you can buy a bundle that includes games(some of which he may not wants for $550-$600. I lucked out and got one. But is is hard.

Oh oh pick me! Go to www.craigslist.com
Heres how it works
Its like eBay, but instead of ordering, you call the number of the owner of the Wii or anything that you want, you go to their house and buy it there so you won't get scammed. But the Wiis are much pricier but include a few games. Trust me, theres lots of people selling their wiis right now.

This article has some trackers; there were some available from Wal-Mart and Toys R Us earlier today. http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/hughes/21625
However, it's pretty well impossible to have it arrive before Christmas due to shipping times (no mail delivery on Tuesday, probably won't ship today and wouldn't ship tomorrow because it's a weekend). But Wal-Mart guaranteed shipping by Christmas, so it would arrive by New Year's.

It's not very likely, I can say that much. I work in the eletronics department of my store, and I've heard from my sources at other stores that pretty much everyone in a 200 mile radius is out of them.
You may be able to hunt one down if you cruise around to every store you know of that would carry it, but it's a small chance you could find one now (unless you go online and buy it for twice as much).
Good luck......

My Best Buy just got in about 10 yesterday, I don't know if it is all Best Buys, they still had a couple left when the night was over, just because they don't tell anyone about them...I recommend running over to Best Buy right now, it's worth the chance.
