Well, I used to be afraid of the dark. Going alone in the basement terrorized me! It was dirty and had many objects that could easily seize the imagination of a young child. I suppose I associated darkness as evil and the absence of something symbolic, Jesus. :D Now I know that "the shadow proves the sunshine".
God bless!

When I was little I was afraid of the basement but as I grew up I became less afraid of it. Though sometimes when I'm done there at night I have an eerie feeling. I think that some people are afraid of the basement because of what they were told when they were kids. For example, ghosts and monsters live in the basement; I think that's what scares some people.

nope not in this house, but then again we have lots of light and the walls are painted white, and I have carpet in my den down there, hubby also has carpet in his "dungeon" area... every dungeon master needs a dungeon....Next year we are going to put in that pink panther basement! I can't wait!
But in the house Ilived in before this, there was an old fashioned freddy krueger style boiler as the main source of heat for the house ( it was an old coal boiler converted to natural gas) there was also an unattached claw foot tub (good for dismembering bodies as our creepy friends would say) and there was a shower head installed right over the basement floor drain ( for easy & convenient clean up I suppose) The stairs going down it were rickety and once while bringing up the laundry, I put my foot right through a stair tread...so that basement was creepy...oh yeah & the spiders... the small ones had bodies the size of nickles and the big ones were the size of a susan b anthony dollar...just the bodies, you could hear them scurry across the floor...it took two or three direct hits to kill them...

Only when moving to a new house, because you never know what's lurking down there, and if there are any ghosts down there (I am really afraid of ghosts)
but then after a while and after knowing the basement well, I am no longer afraid

No. When I was a child though I was scared of our basement. it was a dirt basement, very dark and wet. I fell down the concrete stairs once, or rather was pushed by my rotten brother and that left me feeling even more afraid.
