If you could, would you go on a manned mission to Mars?
Knowing full well you wouldn't see family and friends for a MINIMUM of two years, and that the mission would be fraught with danger, and an innate fear of the unknown?
Why or why not?

I think I would, too.
Curiousity WOULD outweigh the fear...

Brant;
You bring up very interesting points...
Who WOULD go on the next mission, or the ones after?
Thumbs up!

I'd go even if I knew it was to be a one-way trip.

Well Bobbyp41, the answer is NO. And the reason is because that long a trip in such small living space would be hard on the nerves and if you or some one else were to suddenly get cross ways with some other team member, it would effect all the rest. What if you were to wake up and suddenly realize you made a big mistake going and you were only half ways there and still had all that time just to get there, much less the time coming back? How would one pick a crew and know the ones picked would be the right people not knowing how they would react on that long a trip? No I wouldn't go!

I think a lot of people would. I know I would, if I were younger. But thinking about that made me wonder about something else. How many people would volunteer for the *second* mission? Or the third? It is a little different from going to the moon.

When I was younger I would have gone in a heartbeat. Now that I'm retired, I would miss my family too much - and I would risk the mission because my health (good as it is) could go south easier than those younger guys. This would make no sense, but I will support those who do go in any way I can.

I'd go. Curiosity about the unknown outweighs fear.
And I'd bring some cats along. They never worry.

I like how you put the cliffhanger in your question... nice touch.
Um, yea dude, for sure.
I'd be the most exciting thing I'll ever do, and if I actually make it back, I'd have a killer story.

15 years ago, yes.. I would've. I wasn't married, no kids, and I've always wanted to go into space.
Today... no. I wouldn't want to be away from my family for so long. And, danger schmanger... we all gotta die somehow.
