When I was little I wanted a black baby doll; my father got mad about it, but my mother got it for me anyway.

I had white barbies and dolls, but I had black ones too. I always chose them by what they were wearing...a lot more superficial than race actually lol.

My little sister LOVED black dolls when she was little! That was all she wanted. I wanted white dolls. I don't know why, it was just what we always picked out. Now she's married to a white man, and I'm dating a black man. So I don't think it's an indicator of anything other than what catches your eye when you're little!
I don't know what my parents thought about it - I should ask them! I'm sorry your dad is like that, but good on your mom!

I was bought White baby dolls mostly because they were more abundant and for some reason old school black baby dolls were so hideous. They still had very dominant European features but were painted really dark. And had extremely straight hair. Um... the what? lol
I was not a fan of dolls that didn't look like me, lol, I was a militant as a kid, so I didn't really like dolls at all. I wanted a brown baby doll with curly (not kinky hair) and none resembled that. So I read books instead. I'm a nerd to this day, lol.

I had a Black doll and White dolls, but actually, I never really "connected" that much to the White dolls I had. I could never really relate to the straight blond hair, and such. I never liked any dolls at all really-I was more of a person who loved the play-dough and crayons.

I know you said black women but my ex husband was the same as your dad and even threatened my daughter to throw her doll away I never really paid attention like that I was buying her a gift and she picked out what she wanted.
