I'm not sure why. Maybe their moms just found the names appealing? Not all black women have such names, tho. Mine ends in 'elle'.

I met a couple of black girls from Birmingham, England named Laura and Vivienne. Next time I see them, I will ask them.

And like another girl here, I did meet an Erica and also a Debbie when I was in the USA

I have never met a black person with an -isha or a -qua name. I think it's a stereotype and people who don't know any black girls in real life think it's more common than it is. I know some people try to get creative with names, but everyone does that. I know a little white girl named "Tequila." For God's sake!

It's like that joke, or urban myth, about the black lady naming her kids LeMonjelo and Oranjelo. It's not only untrue and absurd, it's insulting and racist!

Here's the site on naming myths - read the whole thing, it's really interesting!

It's a popular diminutive for the feminine version of a masculine name. Like "Jonisha": Little John (feminine); "Liquesha": Little Liquor (feminine); etc. Similar to the "ita" in Spanish. "Mamasita": Little Mama. You get the picture. Hope that clears it up. Later ya'll....

The "isha" on the end of the name means "she who lives" not sure if they know that

a lot of common 'typical' black names originated as imitations of perceived African sounding words....but y does it matter? U might as well ask why do Greek names end with os, as, or apolis, or why Italian names end in vowels. Its all the same thing really.

plus, its not as common as you think.

You should ask them. Perhaps their names have reason and meaning behind them. There's no ultimate correct answer behind how Black American women name their children. If these people are actually your friends, why aren't you asking them instead of asking yahoo answers?
