I work at an office job and after talking to the lady in HR she told me to call the disability office and tell them that I'm pregnant. She said pregnancy isn't a disability but just call and let them know that I am and call them after the baby is born. It seemed like she was having a hard time explaning why exactly I had to do this. What is the point and what will they do after I tell them? I did tell her that it was a long commute from home to work and then she gave me the number to call. Did anyone else have to do this or can you explain why I have to in more detail? Thanks so much!

I am 34 weeks, some companies offer 67%. Mine does. I just filled out the paperwork for short term disability and FMLA. The short term disability gives you 13 weeks paid and FMLA secures your job for 12 weeks while you're on maternity leave. You should actually contact your HR. Your boss is right about suggesting it, but your company may havecertain forms for you to fill out that only you HR has. It'll go smoother rather than calling the office for the short term and they give you the run around. Hope this helps.

First of all, I would think your HR department must have the policy written somewhere. If you can't find it, ask what the policy is. Depending on the employer, you may get some time off before and some time off after the birth of a child. If, after the allotted time (assuming there is allotted time) you need/want extra time, I believe that is where you get into medical leave (if you have a note from the doctor) or you take time under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). If it is a covered employer and you are an eligible employee (see the website below), you can have a total of 12 weeks of UNPAID leave in any one year period.

Now, I am not in HR, but I think if you take FMLA the rule is that you are entitled to a job when you return. Double check the Department of Labor site, and, again, review the written policies your employer has. They are also supposed to post the FMLA information in the office and are in violation of the law if they don't.

Good luck.

If I have a Dr's note, I can go out on short term disability before the birth and have my salary paid at 60% after a 7 day waiting period. After the birth, it isn't called disability, its called Family leave. Maybe that's what the HR woman meant.

We have short term disability at our office, you are able to use that for maternity leave. I was paid a certain percentage of my pay. Maybe you have short term disability at your office. You shouldn't have to call them, HR should have all the forms necessary to get $$ if its provided through your company.
