When my husband was a child they used formaldehyde on his skin for a medical reason, but not into his blood stream. Why are these things even included in vaccines? The more I read the more afraid I get. I've had my son's 2 scheduled vaccinations and each time he is sick for days afterwards. Now it's time for his 6 months and I am torn.

Who knows why they include that stuff in vaccines. Did you know that that stuff is also in a lot of other things as well? There is formaldehyde in furniture polish... you may want to think about that when your son is old enough to pull up on the furniture. A lot of kids that are teething tend to gnaw on anything and everything.

As far as vaccines and autism.....Many parents of children with autism believe the major culprit to be thimerosal, a preservative used in vaccines and other medications. Many parents (the experts) have seen dramatic changes in their child's development after receiving immunizations... I am one of them. Thimerosal is 50% mercury by weight. In October 1998, the FDA banned the use of thimerosal in over the counter medications, but it is still used in most vaccines today despite what others say. Since multiple vaccines are often given on the same day, the amount of mercury injected into a typical infant exceeds the EPA's "safe" limits.

You do spend time reading the current information on vaccinations, don't you? Or do you just subscribe to the "fearmonger's shop"? I'm not using this to put you down, but realize that web sites are not dated. Information you are reading could be 10-15 years old and completely out of date. The preservative used in adult vaccines is no longer used in children's vaccines, for instance.

If you are concerned, consider an altered schedule which requires only one injection for a visit. You'll have to do more visits, but it might be easier to manage.

Interesting note: I just recently found out that adult cases of chronic colitis (infection of the intestines) may be caused by rotovirus (a childhood diarrhea illness for which there is now a vaccine). It can also be caused by norovirus. Now, I had norovirus more than a month ago and it still is causing problems for my intestines. I now support that vaccine as well now that I understand the long term complications that can happen to some.

They are used to "kill" the virus or to weaken it. I do not agree with it being in there. I think it sucks that these ingredients are in here. I know that there are risks of not vaccinating, but there are also some scary risks associated with vaccinating. Honestly, I know that people say the risks of having a bad reaction are low, but do you want to take the chance of your child having a bad reaction. Also, I have been looking at each individual vaccine and the need. Hepatitis B is sexually transmitted, so the risk for an infant is not there. Hepatitis A, is not needed either, many times children can have it without symptoms, and then they are immune for life (that is more than a vaccine can do). Mumps are usually asymptomatic, so this vaccine is not always necessary. Diptheria can be cured with an antibiotic. Measels used to be a normal childhood disease, adn people gained lifetime immunity. Vaccinations do not give lifetime immunity. That is why people have to get booster shots... If you are torn and need more time to think about it, delay his 6 mos. vaccines and you can always get them later. But you will never be able to take them back. I am also not trying to force my views. It is for you to decide. If you want some more reading material on the subject, e-mail me.
EDIT- Also yeah Doodlest websites maybe outdated, but there are many current books.

I am like you...The more I read about the additives in the vaccinations, I can't justify taking the risk with my 7 mo old son. I haven't had his 6 mo well-baby visit because of this. I definitely have decided that he will not get the MMR. I received all of my vaccinations as a child and contracted both Measles and Mumps. Plus, I've read that there hasn't been any studies that suggest the vaccinations (newer ones) even prevent these illnesses. My physician tried to persuade me to accept the vaccinations, stating that "with travel increased throughout the world, we don't know what illnesses may be reborn." I don't know....but I don't want my child with autism or some other irreversible condition that affects his life in a negative manner.

this first part of this answer is a general comment, and not directed toward the asker...

i am a sibling of an autistic person. i am also his legal guardian, so i know first hand the struggle raising a disabled child can be. and i'm 100% IN FAVOR of vaccination. i have had both of my children vaccinated and will have my baby due next june vacciated. my children are 16 and 2. so if any of them should have been affected, it would have been my 16 y.o. son, who has a blood relative with autism AND received vaccines prior to the "mercury" brouhaha.

my son has had, the MMR, HepB, HIB, polio, DTap, Hep A, Menimune, influenza... my daughter has had all except MMR (she's scheduled), Menimune (too young) and Hep A.

my kids are NOT autistic. nor are they vectors for vaccine-preventable infections.

preservatives that are purported to be neurotoxins, are also found in our everyday products (household cleaners, waxes, nail polish, et al), yet we are not overly concerned about that. also, the levels of these preservatives in vaccines are miniscule, and have not been shown to be a link to autism.

now, this IS directed towards the asker:

i know how difficult it is to see your little ones sick. after every shot, my babes had fevers, soreness and were cranky. the reason--as i'm sure you've been told--has NOTHING to do with the preservatives in the vaccine; yet the baby's immune response to the viral particles (which cannot cause disease) in the vaccine. all i ask is that you really educate yourself on the benefits of vaccinations, and the potential risks to your child if they are not vaccinated. unvaccinated children not only are at risk; but children who are too young or too sick for the vaccines are at risk if the number of vaccinated kids in the population drops... there have been recent outbreaks of polio, measles and pertussis primarily due to non-vaccinated kids.

check out the CDC's website on vaccines for more information.

good luck...

oh...and to those who feel it necessary to not vaccinate your kids as a result of some crack-pot research, please let parents know so that you are not invited to the play-yard!!!

Its possible to be sick after vaccs and it not be a problem don't worry soo much. But have you disscussed his symptoms with not only his doctor but a couple diffrent doctors. It is possible to have allergic reactions to vaccs, and sometimes its hard to find the right doctor whos willing to listen and take time to find out. As for what they did to your husband Im possitive that vaccines have come along way since then, but you always have to be cautious, especially about new vaccines because they havent been used long enough and symptoms can sometimes take years to become known.

i come across that wearing a hat will be a good element... especially for hiding a marginally tremendous piece of duct tape, secured from the bottom of my cranium each of ways round to the brow... preserving that youthful seem in position ! try no longer to cough or you could rip out some hairs ! in case you nonetheless have an interest in injecting some thing in there, Elmer's makes a thick, non-poisonous glue that would want to educate fairly everlasting !

The key here is to get information from both sides. Do not just trust the information that your doctor gives you. His goal is to have every child fully immunized by the age of two. Get information from both sides of the fence. Some people think that anyone who decides not to immunize their children is stupid and uneducated. I am here to tell you that I researched both sides regarding immunizations and I made a decision based on all of the information, not just one side. You are the parent and it is up to you to be informed about you child's health care. There are some excellent websites that will give you more information than just what the doctor gives you. This will make you a much more informed parent. Good luck with whatever you decide.

They're not. I'm all for vaccines, but only thimerosal (preservative) - free ones. Do your research, decide what's best for your family, and request thimerisal - free if you choose to vaccinate. My state is completely preservative - free, but it never hurts to ask. Don't just assume that all vaccinations have mercury or other deadly substances. Good luck.
Oh, and as a side note, there has been NO proof that children get autism from vaccines. That was a THEORY years ago that has since been dismissed. There are children here who have never had a mercury shot a day in their life, and even children who have never been vaccinated at all, who still have autism. It's the autism groups who have been brainwashed.

You have to weight the risks of after effects vs. the benifits. Unvaccinated kids are more suppseptible to diseases that can kill children. Measles, Mumps, Polio, etc.

It's all based on statistics. Which is more benificial to treat every child and have an adverse reaction in less then 0.01 % of the population. Or save 5 % of the population from getting the disease which can kill 25% of the people infected?

There's a lot of numbers involved before a vaccine is ever approved and used on children.
