Unless you're spilling water on the floor when you fill it or it's leaking you shouldn't have much of a problem. Most modern humidfiers work by pulling air over a wick system, The wick pulls water up from the bin, and as the dry air passes over it, it pulls the moisture from the wick and puts it into the air. If this is what you have, puttting anything under it shouldn't make a difference assuming you're not getting water directly on the floor. Putting a small rug there may help a little any noise the thing makes, I have one and it's a little quieter with something under it. And for the record I used to install/sand/refinish wood floors when I was younger, did it for about 15 years

It will until the rug gets wet, then you don't have any protection. Might want to try putting some heavy plastic on the floor then the rug on top of that, or the rug on the floor and plastic on top of the rug, should protect the floor..You want protection from any mist from the humidifier while it's running.
