After lighting pilot and leaving lit for multiple minutes before turning to "on", flame goes out almost immediately after turning switch to "on" position instead of lighting. I then can't relight pilot for at least 30 minutes. An suggestions prior to phoning gas company (as instructed on side of heater)?

Yes. I am holding down the red button the whole time after clicking my piezo. I see the flame burning through the window during the time I have the button pressed and for a couple of minutes after releasing the red button before turning the knob to "on".

Turns out I have a leak inside my water heater somewhere and water is blocking the air intake. This was discovered after the thermocouple was replaced and I got the same results.

WOW!! Turns out my water regulator is not reducing pressure (rated 25-75 and read over 100 and has my TP valve popping off to release pressure. So tomorrow, a buddy (who does this stuff) and I are replacing my regulator. Thanks for the assistance folks!!

just to make sure....your holding the red button down the whole time right? after about a minute or two you can let go of the button and move the burner to ON. it that doesn't work, call gas company, they will check it out for free. water heater aint no thing to be taken lightly as you know, it can jack you or your house up pretty bad.

You may also have air in the line. it's getting enough gas for the pilot but not for the burner. Try it a few more times and if that's the problem it will eventually go.
