I am about to take my car out of town and my coolant level is low. I was just going to top it off but wasn't sure about mixing new coolant with old coolant. I know what type I should use, but wasn't sure about mixing. Any help is appreciated and if you have a link to an outside reference, even better. Happy Holidays.

This is from the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owners Manual:

Adding Coolant
Your vehicle has been built with an improved antifreeze/coolant that allows extended maintenance intervals. This antifreeze/coolant can be used up to 5 years or 100,000 miles before replacement. To prevent reducing this extended maintenance period, it is important that you use the same antifreeze/coolant throughout the life of your vehicle. Please review these recommendations for using Hybrid Organic Additive Techology (HOAT) antifreeze/coolant.

When adding antifreeze/coolant, a minimum solution of 50% recommended Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 5 Yeat/100,000 Mile Formula HOAT, or equivalent, in water should be used. Use higher concentrations (not to exceed 70%) if temperature below -34oF are anticipated

I had the same problem with my 01 Cherokee, and after doing extensive search and replace I found out the the radiator was clogged. I ended up flushing out the radiator with a Hugh pressure hose and it fixed the problem. Pretty much there was no leak. What happens is under pressure from the water pump the coolant has no where to go because of the clogged radiator, so it leaks anywhere it can even out of the tail pipe. This leak is especially amplified when driving long distances.

Actually.. if you have enough coolant chemical in it.. you can just add some regular water to bring it up. You can mix coolants with out problems. However, it's best to add water to 'top it off' and then, when time permits, flush the system completely and refill. The coolant flush should be done about 100k miles.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Mixing it is fine. Just make sure you use the right kind and have your system flushed every 15.000 miles or so.
