It would be Sandy Koufax. I actually saw one of his four no hitters and every time you went to a game when he was pitching the possibility of a no hitter was there. The Dodgers averaged about 15k more fans at the games he was pitching and the stadium was electrifying. My one wish for all true baseball fans would be for all of you to have had the opportunity to see him pitch, in his prime, so you can understand what I am talking about.

My most favorite player of now, is David Eckstein from the St. Louis Cardinals. I just love how he is short, but he's still a great baseball player around all those tall guys. He's a great short stop, and sooooo much fun to watch at bat. It's fun watching him tire the pitcher out. Of past, that's hard. I'd have to say Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron. Amazing baseball players.

There are many historical figures in baseball that merit some thought, but I have to limit my selection to someone who actually played during my time as a baseball fan. Before my time Gil Hodges would be a choice, just for being the decent and quiet man that he was. He would blow a kiss to his wife Joan (in the stands) as he rounded third on every home run. He had the largest hands in baseball too. Good old number 14.

Hodges was on the down side of his career as I began following baseball (1959), but I had new hero within 2 years. I grew up in Los Angelesin the early/mid-1960's and that means one person and one person only meets my criteria for my favorite baseball player of all time: Sandy Koufax.

Not only was he a quiet and self-effacing individual who sought to avoid the spotlight to let it shine on the other stars of the team (Maury Wills, Don Drysdale, etc.), but he had quite a fastball too. Led the NL in ERA FIVE straight seasons (1962-66), strikeouts 3 times (would have been 5 except for injuries), victories 3 times (would have been 4 except for injuries), threw 4 no-hitters, and honestly - every time he went to the mound you almost expected a no-hitter or shutout PLUS 10 or more strikeouts. Who wouldn't love a player like that on their home team.

I also list him as my favorite because he did the unthinkable - he QUIT when he was at the top of game because he wanted to hold on to his health (and the use of his left arm).

See the excellent book "A Lefty's Legacy" for more on him, but Sandy is my all-time favorite.

Charles Nagy, retired starting pitcher for the Cleveland Indians because he was a real gamer who consistenly won yet flew under everyone's radar. He never complained and he was always a gentleman to the fans. He was recently inducted into the Indians Hall of Fame at Jacobs Field. One year he was second in wins in the AL only to Pedro Martinez yet basically went unrecognized. The unsung hero of the Indians winning teams in the 90's.

my favorite player growing up was Fred Lynn. He was rookie of the year and MVP in 1975; and just played with reckless abandon, which sadly impacted what would have been a HOF career. I was very disappointed when he left the Sox for CAL in 81 and proceeded to hit the first Grand Slam in All Star game history.

Past: Mike J. Schmidt because he was an amazing player, and played for the Phillies his whole career.
Present: Chase C. Utley because he is also an amazing player who plays with an intense love for the game and he has that determination and drive to succeed.

My all-time favorite BASEBALL PLAYER is Pete Rose. Don't like what he did as a manager and after baseball, but as a player, no complaints. Fiercest competitor in baseball since Ty Cobb.

Ernie Banks. Without questioin. His hitting and fielding skills (at 2 positions!) were on a par with the past greats of the game, and his attitude of "Let's play two" is in stark contrast to the whinings of modern day players.

Plus, you never read/heard/saw Banks being an *** in public or creating problems for anyone around him.
